history/future of free trade in the Americas

I lunched with visiting professor Ralph Folsom again when he talked about Nafta & Free Trade in the Americas: Prospects for the Future @ his 9th annual lecture @ John Marshall law school.  Here’s what he had to say: The Andean Community kicked off the free trade movement by bringing together Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, & Peru

Complete X-Com series for only USD $2.00

I remember the first time I hacked into X-Com’s hex codes. I was in middle school and it was right about that time when Norton DOS came out. Apart from the colorful menus and new command lines, it came with a Norton code editor and it was then I discovered the joys of manipulating the in-game weapon values. I found a way to edit the weapon templates so after saving a copy of the original file I’d have a little fun with the values. For instance, the stun rod was an instant kill

Trial versions in a post-App store economy

Apple’s App Store is unique in two aspects: it is, first of all, insanely successful – and does not allow time-limited trial versions. These two aspects have led quite a few to question the value of free trials – unfortunately, getting data out of developers has been all but easy

80 Port USB Power Overload

At first glance we became very excited about this 80 port USB board, we thought it was a huge USB hub.  Then we read the details and realized it’s just an 80 port USB power source .  And we say “just” with all the enthusiasm that word can carry.  Wicked awesome from our point of view. We’ve done the math and have still come up short on the exact NEED for the 80 port USB power board, but never-the-less, it makes you smile.  Kinda like the iPad [even without USB support]. Our calculations seem to bring us back to quality control, that is the only legitimate reason why this board would be of “true” value. Thanko is offering the USB power board for $165. I have two questions, please answer on Facebook :  1) do you need this?  2)  what is a legit use for this other than QC testing for some USB gadget

43 seconds with the Android-powered Dell Mini 5

Ok, enough about the Apple iPad. It seems that the gadget paparazzi managed to grab less than a minute with Michael Dell, and during that time we get a glimpse of the Mini 5 in action. Well, depending on what you consider action, that is. Mr. Dell swiped through a few screens, showed the 5

Don’t Worry About Collateral Damage in Tank Battles in Suburbia

Tank Battles in Suburbia , from Cloud Scissor , is a dark, but funny, take on the classic tank shooter. Hop into a tank and start blasting away, not just at other tanks but also at pricey homes, cop cars, warehouses, fast-food restaurants – in short, everything in sight. When the battle ends, you’ll see in dollars and cents just how much collateral damage you’ve caused. Picture yourself in one of eight towns with names like Edison, Montclair and Summit, where you can rampage in Campaign or Custom Game modes. T-Mobile myTouch2 / myTouch Slide (HTC Espresso) photos leaked

T-Mobile USA will soon have a new myTouch Android smartphone, namely the T-Mobile myTouch Slide (or myTouch2 – it’s not clear yet what the handset’s official name is). The folks over at Droid Developer have it that the myTouch2 / myTouch Slide is actually the HTC Espresso – one of the phones included in HTC’s 2010 line-up. The big difference between the myTouch2 / myTouch Slide and the original T-Mobile myTouch (aka HTC Magic) is that the former comes with a sliding QWERTY keyboard. There’s also an optical trackpad instead of a trackball.

Conflicting Studies on Drivin’ ‘n Talkin’

Just admit it. You do it. Sometimes. No matter what state you live in, at least once in a while you pick up the phone while you’re driving or return that text right quick at the stoplight. Because the girl on the other end of the line is hot enough that the thought of car accidents is pushed back to a far dusty corner of your mind.

Bad Company 2’s Open Beta impressions: Squad Respawns

It definitely isn’t a Modern Warfare 2 killer as I thought. As a fan of the Battlefield series from way back, Bad Company 2 brings back the same tactical excitement with the addition of vulgarity and adrenaline. So the short of it is if you’re wanting that fast, arcade action from shooters, Modern Warfare 2 is the Diablo II “quick in, quick out” of this genre. But if you’re looking for a deeper experience where “there is no I in team” and squad based tactics matter, Bad Company 2 should not be ignored
