State of the Multiverse 56
Guardians Of The Galaxy #22 I’m wondering just how big the Realm Of Kings is supposed to be, when it finally arrives. In this week’s Guardians Of The Galaxy #22 we will see the birth (or not) of a dark god that impregnated itself within Moondragon and is welcomed by the Universal Church of Truth.

Nokia Ovi maps for N97 released
Having surprised at least a few people (and no doubt upset TomTom and Garmin) last week by making Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn directions free for select S60 users , Nokia have now added N97 support. The new version is available directly through the N97 itself, by navigating to the software update client in the applications folder; we’d recommend doing that over WiFi simply for the speed benefits. You’ll need to be running N97 OS 2.0.x in order to load Ovi Maps, and apparently that means some people are still out of luck. You can check which version you’re running by tapping in *#0000#; if it’s under 2.0.x, head over to Nokia’s software update page to see if they can help. Otherwise Nokia say an update is being worked on

Motorola Zeppelin is not the XT800? Might be announced at MWC
Until now, we thought that Motorola Zeppelin is just a codename for the XT800 that’s been officially presented in China. But it looks like the Zeppelin is a slightly different Android smartphone. While the XT800 is a high-end device, the new Zeppelin that appeared today over at Mobil.cz seems to be a mid-end phone. Unlike the XT800, which has a 3.7 inch 854 x 480 pixels touchscreen display (its official specs can be found here ), the Zeppelin only has a 3.2 inch 480 x 320 pixels screen. The unannounced Android handset also features a touch-sensitive navigation pad, compass, GPS, 5MP camera and the MotoBlur UI.

Softpedia ’s Filip Truta stumbled upon a gold mine of Apple Tablet info, the gold mine being Jason Calacanis’ Twitter posts about the overhyped gadget. Calacanis – co-founder of Weblogs, a network of blogs that includes the famous tech blog engadget – admitted to the world that he is one of the beta testers of the Apple Tablet; he says his unit was given to him 10 days ago. While he won’t show pics or even say what the gadget’s formal name will be, he swears by his revelations, almost all of which are quite specific. Here are some of Calacanis’ revelations: “The price will be 599, 699 and 799 (I think it’s safe to say the prices are in US $) depending on size and memory in apple tablet.

MIDI-controlled circuit bending interface
Daniel Park describes his approach to controlling circuit bent Alesis QSR Quadrasynth through MIDI data, simplifying control for musicians – With this design I wanted the entire bent interface under MIDI control. Any MIDI source: MIDI cc’s, program changes, tempo synch, MIDI machine commands, notation can be routed to any destination on the circuit bent interface via sysex programming. […] The circuit bent interface features two patch bays on a bank of rotary switches. One patch bay is 10 points dedicated to the effects processor bends while the other patch bay is 24 points dedicated to the oscillator bends. With rotaries you can get creative and efficient. No more massive amounts of drilling for point to point patch bays.

last minute apple tablet release predictions
So with Apple’s impending release announcement of the iPad/iSlate/iTablet – whatever it’s called, I thought I’d take a gamble on what I think are the highest likelihood features, specs and pricing we’ll see from Apple later today. While much of what I’ll lay out here is speculation on my part, it’s all grounded in various reports, leaks and industry insiders that I’ve been gathering over the last few weeks and months

Six supposed new Archos models rendered for your speculative enjoyment
Archos hasn’t seemed to secure much love for its latest, the Archos 9 tablet , so maybe it’s going back to what it does best for its next suite of products: a quintet of mostly straightforward players along with a titillating new flavor of the Archos 7. First is the simple and cheap Archos Key, a €20 device with 4GB of storage and microSD expansion. Then there’s the Archos Vision Slim, a slenderized and button-free version of the original Vision , again packing just 4GB of storage but going for €40 this time.

N97 Ovi Maps Free Navigation Officially Available [UPDATE via N97 itself]
Nokia Conversations reports that the N97 is now supported officially (some may have already found N97 mini’s ovi maps .sis to have worked for them) for the new Ovi Maps which brings users free turn-by-turn walk and drive navigation The new Ovi Maps is available through the software update client in the device . You simply open the Applications Folder, Software Update client (big green arrow) and choose the new Ovi Maps from the list. [You might even get a prompt from Ovi Maps itself telling you an update is available, and it'll bring you to SW update] At the big announcement last week, N97 users were shocked to find out they were not on the list of supported handsets for free turn-by-turn navigation. But very quickly, Nokia said that it would be available a week later on the 28th (technically tomorrow) You will need to be on firmware V2.0.x (some N97 users may not be able to get it yet but Nokia are apparently working on it) My N97 is on V20.0.019 – Nokia Software Updater on computer says that’s the latest firmware update

Last minute Apple tablet leaks: images emerge, books to cost $12.99-14.99, $1 per episode TV shows?
In the waning moments before Apple’s highly anticipated tablet event, a few last minute leaks are stirring up the excitement. First, we have some blurry pictures of a tablet device of approximately 9-10 inches in size running a version of the iPhone OS. The device is encased in a plastic housing, bolted down to a table and covered with a black drape. This cloak and dagger treatment is reportedly standard practice for any super secret Apple device so these images may indeed be the Apple tablet. Apple is also reportedly in last minute negotiations with book publishers and television studios to finalize pricing for its rumored tablet device.

Mobiado Classic 712ZAF – new luxury phone announced
Mobiado , the Canadian manufacturer of luxurious (and often weird ) mobile phones, has just announced its first phone of 2010: the Mobiado Classic 712ZAF. Building on the heritage of the Mobiado Luminoso series, the Classic 712ZAF is a candybar “crafted with a strong and vivid visual identity” – well, at least that’s what Mobiado says.

“I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” Goes GSM and GPS
Remember the “Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” TV commercials from the 80’s? The advertised product was a personal emergency response system (PERS) for seniors that included a base station and a pendant that interfaced with an analog phone to dial out for help when the pendant’s button was pressed. MobileHelp is a more modern version of that device. It incorporates GSM and GPS features so the person using the product isn’t restricted to their home

Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis
We’ve heard of a few inventive ideas for detecting tsunamis, and it looks like a group of researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (or NOAA ) have now come up with another: put all those undersea internet cables to a second use. While they haven’t moved beyond computer models just yet, the group has apparently found that voltmeters attached to the end of an undersea cable are able to detect the small electric field stirred up by tsunamis, which measure around 500 millivolts. As New Scientist reports, however, the idea does have some considerable limitations, including that it wouldn’t be able to pinpoint the exact location or direction of a tsunami, and that any such system would first need to filter out noise caused by other natural events and even the cable itself. Other researchers also caution that it’s just as important to develop a system to quickly pass on a warning to potentially affected areas once a tsunami has been detected. Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 11:02:00 EST.

Theme Review Wednesday: Heart Chick, Halcyon, BerryShell
Hunting for new BlackBerry themes has become a new joy to me. When we started doing the theme review feature, I kind of slogged along, dreading the bi-weekly ritual of finding and then testing themes (made even harder when I had an incompatible device and have to borrow). That changed recently, and now I enjoy reading about new themes on different sites and then loading them up.
