Sharp solar-powered phone (SH6230C) coming to China, other global markets

Sharp , one of Japan’s largest mobile phone makers, announced the upcoming availability of the solar-powered Sharp SOLAR HYBRID SH6230C in China. The company has already released solar-powered phones in Japan last year, but this is the first time when it launches such a handset outside its home market. The Sharp SH6230C is a clamshell that features a 2.9 inch internal display, a 5MP camera with autofocus, and “Sharp’s proprietary solar cell module.” The phone will be available in China starting February, for a price that should be announced later on. Leveraging on the increasing demand for solar-powered devices, Sharp will introduce its new phone in other global markets, too (although it didn’t say where exactly). Alongside the SOLAR HYBRID SH6230C, Sharp also plans to launch other two phones in China: the SH6220C and SH6228C, which feature Memory LCD – “a low-power-consuming display with high visibility under the daylight.” Via Press release Similar Posts: High-end SOLAR HYBRID SH-08A phone from NTT DoCoMo Cheap Samsung E1107 Crest Solar phone announced ZegnaSport Solar JKT Jacket to power your phone and iPod LG has solar powered eco-friendly phone too HTW S116 Solar Mobile Phone

Mattel’s first ever folding Hot Wheels are set to hit stores in August, and by the looks of things, they are going to be a definite must-have. “Steath Rides” as they have been dubbed, can be folded into a compact form that’s similar to a credit card in size and about as thick as an average cellphone. At the push of a button, the flat car will transform into a remote controlled vehicle. The initial run will feature five different designs that include two cars, two tanks and the Batmobile Tumbler.

Intern’s Corner: Solar charger for iPhone 3GS

Every other week, MAKE’s awesome interns tell about the projects they’re building in the Make: Labs, the trouble they’ve gotten into, and what they’ll make next. By Tyler Moskowite, engineering intern I recently received my first smart phone, an iPhone 3GS, from my brother who just got back from Iraq. It has turned into my PDA, map, social networker, and a boatload of other stuff I didn’t even know it was capable of doing. Let’s just say simply, I love this device

Uh, What?: Taxidermied Mouse Flash Drive

This is a taxidermied mouse with a flash drive wedged up its ass . It reminds me spying days when I made off with a bunch of top secret files from the Pentagon. Except that wasn’t a flash drive , it was a stack of 5¼-inch floppies. And let me tell you: based on the way I was walking you would’ve sworn they were only 3½-inchers

It’s January 27th 2010 and SlashGear is outside the Yerba Buena Center – looking pretty darn resplendent in its paint-spattered decor – waiting to bring you all the news from Apple’s latest media event.  Biggest expectation today is a new iPad tablet; we’ve supposedly seen shots of the display and shots of the casing , now all we need is Steve Jobs to take to the stage and make it official.

Improve on a Classic? Timbuk2 has done it.

Timbuk2 , makers of the recognizable 3-panel messenger bags (which are great for holding our gadgetry) have recently redesigned their very popular Classic Messenger Bag.  The “Classic Messenger 2010″ has added functional features which some thought were lacking in the previous version.  As in the past, it is available in two styles, pre-built and custom.  Both feature the new Napolean Pocket, TruFit Cam Buckle, and 3-Zip Front Organizer.  The custom also includes an optional Laptop Loveglove, choice of binding color and a bunch of new fabrics and colors that allow you to fully customize the look of your gear-hauler.  The pre-built is available in XS to XL sizes, $70 to $110.  The custom varies in size and price depending on features you select, but start at $100 to … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: Gear , Laptop Gear , News Tagged: gear bag , Laptop Bag Improve on a Classic?

Newsstand iPhone App Forced to Change Name, Pulled from App Store [iPhone Apps]

HDD actuated acoustical instrument

This is the multichord, a one-string musical instrument built by [Christopher Mitchell]. The string is a 20 pound mono-filament thread stretched between a wooden bridge and the read/write head of a hard drive. The idea is that the vibrations of the string are picked up and amplified acoustically by the sounding box that serves as the body of the instrument. The frequency of vibration (pitch) is changed by adjusting the tension of the string through the application of various voltages to the HDD head

Movie: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

No person who thinks of him- or herself as a “maker” should miss Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs , which is loosely based on Judi and Ron Barrett’s eponymous 1972 children’s book. I don’t have kids, but I loved it, and this movie kind of made me want to have an adorable little nerdy maker-child, at least for a day, so I could watch it with her. The scene where Flint is curled up in a waste barrel, lamenting all his failed inventions (“Spray-on shoes!” “Ratbirds!”), while his relentlessly uncreative father looks on helplessly, is particularly choice. Apple tablet casing leaks?

There’s a little over an hour until Apple’s Steve Jobs takes to the stage to – we’re presuming – announce the new Apple tablet , but to tide you over how about some purported leaked images of the slate’s casing.  Briefly showing up on a Chinese messageboard, and then promptly deleted, these shots show an indecently thin chassis together with several cut-outs and notches presumably for charging, buttons and headphones. Judging by one of the photos – which shows four of the casings along with a pretty intimidating robot arm – the shots were taken during wireless radiation testing.  The tablet is presumed to have an internal 3G connection – perhaps even support for both Verizon and AT&T – so that certainly makes sense. Earlier on today shots of the front of the tablet – including the device powered on – were seemingly leaked

Urbanears Plattan review

The Plattan headphones from new kid on the block Urbanears don’t always produce the clearest audio, but they look stylish, are fairly affordable and seem durable. If you mainly listen to hip-hop and want headphones with plenty of bass, volume and style, the Plattans could be a suitable option

Motorola Zeppelin spotted hopping train to Barcelona?

First, a disclaimer: we’ve heard the “Zeppelin” name before , both from Motorola and from Palm before that — we have no idea why it keeps coming up, particularly given the obvious references to epic disasters. That said, mobil.cz is reporting that this rather shapely device is an all-new Motorola smartphone bearing Android and the Zeppelin name that’s scheduled for unveiling at MWC in Barcelona next month. It’s said to have touch-sensitive buttons below the display, a 5 megapixel cam, 3.2-inch HVGA display, GPS, and Blur , presumably (well, hopefully) based on Android 2.0 or 2.1. In other words, it won’t be the highest-end phone on the block, but it won’t be the lowest, either — and it could very well be the most stylish
