Mobile FireFox for Android ready to launch next month?

Earlier this month, Mozilla finally released their Mobile FireFox browser albeit still being an RC1 version. It was also only limited to the Maemo-powered Nokia N900 , but based on what Camp-firefox.de reports, we might be seeing a version of FireFox Mobile compatible for the Android platform available to the public as early next month. According to them, the Android version has been complete since December of last year though it still wasn’t capable of browsing during the time. The decision to launch it on the Android platform isn’t a hard one to make especially from a business standpoint. Google isn’t as strict as Apple when it comes to offering up apps, and it’s hard to deny that Android-powered devices are the in thing these days

3D TV coming to British pubs this weekend, can expect chilly reception

Imagine, if you will, the quintessential British pub. A pair of elderly chaps sitting in the quiet corner discussing their best Spitfire manoeuvers, the teenage whippersnapper putting on a mature voice and trying to buy alcohol at the bar, and the inevitable legion of sports fans setting up for their weekly life or death football match. Now put 3D glasses on ‘em — doesn’t work, does it?

OLPC XO-1.5 approved by FCC, releasing soon?

The OLPS XO-1.5 was previously announced in 2009, and was believed to come in January 2010.  It hasn’t been released yet, but has just reportedly received approval from the FCC , always a milestone to watch for. The FCC filings contain label pictures of the device, as well as a test report that reveals 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi support.  Further details have not been shown, but it has been previously noted to be equipped with a VIA C7-M processor running at double the speed as the XO-1, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of storage, and an upgraded Via chipset to feature a 3D graphics engine and HD video decoding. Availability of the XO-15 has been kept mum, but the FCC filing is a marker that the device is soon to be released.

World’s Oldest and Most Expensive Commercially-Produced Camera and some philosophizing…

Made by Alphones Giroux in Paris in 1839 based on the plans drawn up by his stage-painter and showman brother-in-law Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, this camera will be auctioned on May 29 by WestLicht Auctions in Vienna with the starting price 200,000 Euros and the estimate is 500,00-700,000 Euros. Well, isn’t it always such a mix of feelings (at least for some of us) when we see “the very first” of the products which are already ordinary parts of our lives and hence we take for granted. After looking at this camera, one can (at least for a few seconds) appreciate the advancement and the variety of the cameras that are available now. Easy to say but this is how it looked 171 years ago and it is amazing how much and how fast technology evolved in the last couple of decades in itself only… Another thing is, I guess it is one of the ironies of our lives to witness a certain oldest genre of product as being far more valued than its newest and most advanced example.

iCall VoIP now available over 3G on iPhone/iPod Touch, possibly on iPad?

An update to the iPhone developer SDK now enables Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users to make VoIP calls over cellular networks.  The application, dubbed iCall, is the only one in the Apple App Store at this current moment that can allow for VoIP over 3G connections. The other obvious question at the moment is, will the iPad be equipped with this feature?  Apple’s newly announced tablet has app support, 3G, Wi-Fi, microphone, and speaker, all that’s needed for VoIP calls.  If so, then the iPad may truly lives up to its hype as an “oversized iPhone”

Review: Giant Garbage Pail Kids Wall Graphics

If you were wondering how one of those Garbage Pail Kids graphics we are giving away would actually look on your wall or laptop, I have put together a gallery that might help clear things up. More specifically, I peeled and stuck the 4-foot Atom Bomb graphic in increasingly random and inappropriate spots in my home, and, in some cases, juxtaposed it with what is traditionally considered to be “fine art.” In the end, you just might find that art featuring humorously-named, comically mutated children is just as valid. Conclusion: I haven’t kept up with Garbage Pail Kids in recent years, but if you are a fan of the classics (and who isn’t), you will undoubtedly be pleased with the quality of the prints from LTL . I’m pretty confident you could stick and re-stick the image on your wall somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 times as LTL suggests, but I wouldn’t go slapping these things up all willy-nilly. If the graphic sticks to itself, you are going to have a hell of a time pulling it apart again.

T-Mobile launches early upgrade program for post-paid smartphone customers

If you’re like us, keeping a smart phone for two years really isn’t an option. After about 6 months of ownership the honeymoon is over; after 9 months you begin to obsess over a few battle scars your phone has acquired, and by month 12 you are actively seeking your phone’s demise so you have an excuse to buy the latest and greatest. Starting immediately, T-Mobile will be offering post-paid smartphone customers on a two year contract — or feature phone owners looking to upgrade to a smartphone — two tiers of upgrade pricing… as long as you are willing to renew your two year deal. The move is aimed at curbing the number of customers jumping from T-Mobile to other networks, specifically AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Customers will be eligible for a “tier 1″ discount if they have had their phone for 1-11 months, are currently in a two year contract, and have an individual voice plan that is $29.99 or higher — $49.99 or higher for family plans — and are upgrading to, or buying a new smartphone.

Elevation Partners increases Yelp investment

In a move which does not really surprise me, the folks at Elevation Partner’s have just increased their stake in the local search / user review engine Yelp from 25 to 100 million USD. CNet reports the following: Elevation Partners, the Silicon Valley private equity firm that counts U2’s Bono among its investors, announced Wednesday that it has committed up to $100 million in funding for reviews site Yelp. It’s initially investing $25 million in the Series E round, and plans to increase the investment to up to $100 million through the purchase of stock from employees whose stock has vested, as well as other eligible shareholders. … If we look at Elevation’s past investments and the way they have moved the webOS, a clear trend emerges: the folks at ELP want to become a major player in “user data processing” for individuals . The real strength of the Pre is not so much its powerful applications, but rather its “communicativeness” – the webOS is truly a “web OS” in that it makes getting the most out of your data its prime task

Nokia Research Center unveils mobile radar concept

Nokia Research Center (NRC) Helsinki today unveiled a new research concept at Demo House 2010 research exhibition in Espoo, Finland. The mobile radar demonstration shows how a mobile device can use an active radar sensor to measure speed and the direction of movement of approaching objects, just as traditional RADAR would. It uses electromagnetic waves to provide a different type of mobile wireless sensing. This research concept could enable new ways for users to interact with their device, for example via gesture control
