Recommended: Engadget’s Ten gadgets that defined the decade

I remember the introduction of the iPhone like it was yesterday: Team Engadget was holed up in a dingy, smelly hotel conference room south of the Las Vegas Convention Center in the thick of CES while our then-Editor-in-chief, a guy called Ryan Block, had taken a quick jaunt up to San Francisco to cover Macworld live. I can’t describe the feeling in that room, the feeling I had as I was preparing our iPhone announcement post — my heart was pounding. It was as though we knew what to expect and had absolutely no idea what to expect at the same time

Leaked: Swype For Android Beta Unofficially Available For Motorola Droid

When Swype was nice enough to give us the world’s first hands-on with their ultra-nifty alternative keyboard on the Android platform, I wasn’t about to leak the installation files. It’s just not my style. Now that someone else has gone and leaked them, though, I’m more or less obligated to show you how to get it up and running.

Minigore for iPhone, Episode 3.5 is live: dual wielding and more characters!

“Ooo, Loot!” Alright. I think it’s clear by now that Apple has definitely sped the approval process up a bit. Minigore, my favourite analog stick shooter on the iPhone, just released a Christmas update early this December – yet here we are again with a New Year’s update.

Motorola to launch 2 Android handsets at CES, says some dude

I usually avoid posting rumors started by analysts, because it seems like most have the batting average of a dizzy, blindfolded toddler. Alas, with CES just days away, everything worth writing about is being kept under tight lock and key; at this point, any big leaks would be like somebody ruining a surprise party by shouting “THERE’S A SURPRISE PARTY IN THERE” as the special guest walks up the driveway. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry, who at least has some sort of history with Motorola predictions , has a few guesses as to what Motorola will be announcing next week

8GB iPhone 3GS on the way?

It looks like Apple is getting ready to replace the aging 8GB iPhone 3G that currently sells for $99 with a newer iPhone 3GS model, if their packaging is to be believed. A user on the German apfetalk discussion forum posted the image above, which is the label on the iPhone 3G 8GB box, and while he did receive a regular iPhone 3G, the box clearly says “iPhone 3GS v2.2 8GB” and has us thinking that Apple is finally ready to have the entire product line fall under the 3GS brand.

Full Body Scanners Smart or Peep Show for TSA

Next week will be the first time in a few months I have traveled in an airplane and honestly in the wake of the failed bombing of the Northwest Airline, I’m a bit apprehensive. I had gotten down the take the shoes off, whipping the belt out, and unloading the computers in trays in just a few minutes. But I can only imagine what we will be headed in for now. Domestic flights will certainly be on high alert but international flights are going to be hellish. In the international US Airport terminals you will most likely find full-body scanners as a primary screening tool.  While this is all well and good because of the current situation – is it really?  I’m personally not a fan of the TSA since they ransacked my luggage sometime ago and stole a diamond ring of mine, so do I really want them to see me naked now too?? I mean are they really going to pay attention to a bomb strapped to a thigh, or rather how big someone’s fake boobs are?  Are they going to notice something hidden in someones undies or something else in someone’s undies

Verizon’s Pixi likely to be delayed

Verizon has had its fair share of software issues in the past – and it looks like the Palm Pixi is the next victim. DigiTimes now claims the following: … Compal Communications in the fourth quarter of 2009 will total only 600,000 units instead of 800,000 units projected previously, … The orders for Pixi smartphones were reduced as part of the cellphone’s software has failed to pass tests conducted by Palm’s client, Verizon Wireless, said the paper, noting that shipments to Verizon will be delayed to the first quarter of 2010. Given DigiTimes once flawless track record, I am still somewhat inclined to believe them – but one never knows…

eBay’s Holiday Gift: 1.5M Sales Via Mobile

Mobile phone shopping is easier than driving to the store or even booting up a laptop to make a purchase because you can do it when you’re inspired to make a gift purchase. Maybe that’s why eBay performed remarkably well this holiday season . The e-commerce auction and retail company says that users purchased 1.5 million eBay items from either eBay’s mobile site or their iPhone app over the holidays. According to eBay, purchases ranged from the mundane to a $75,000 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, a $19,000 boat, and a $10,000 Steinway grand piano.

Google Prepping for Nexus One and Multi-Touch Netbook Release in 2010

Google knows that Apple may have won the battle of the consumer smartphone in 2009, but execs in the company must be ramping up for a mobile takeover in 2010. That’s not to say they’ll succeed, but the company is inviting top reporters to a press event next Tuesday where they will likely reveal their Google phone called Nexus One — reminding many of Apple’s traditional show-off events for new product releases. For Google and Apple, the game is on. Yesterday details were leaked about the Nexus One, and they weren’t as exciting or game-changing as some had speculated (some guessed that the Nexus One would offer advertising in exchange for free minutes and even lower or free hardware). Gizmodo broke down the reality and the story with Nexus One site screenshots yesterday… the phone will be on sale for two prices: $180 for T-Mobile “Even More” plan contracts and $530 unlocked

Kaiser Permanente Teams With mobileStorm For SMS Reminders, Sees 30% Cost Savings

Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plan, has teamed with mobileStorm , a digital marketing company with a decade of experience under its belt, to launch an innovative SMS-based patient reminder solution . Like most organizations, Kaiser was faced with the problem of needing to cut costs, and decided to target the most cost-sensitive areas of their business- patient communication.  The healthcare giant chose mobileStorm’s mobile marketing platform to provide efficient and cost-effective paperless reminders to its subscribed customer base, while continually allowing customers to opt-out or into the appointment reminder database. To meet Kaiser’s goals for patient communication, mobileStorm developed an end-user SMS platform solution that allowed for the creation and managment of general appointment reminders, such as scheduled office visits, specific treatment reminders, such as mammograms, and even specific notification of completed lab results, such as a text saying “your lab results are ready.” Beginning October 1st, 2008 mobileStorm began a one month pilot program with Kaiser to prove it’s effectiveness.  Taking 87,950 cell phone numbers from Kaiser’s patient database, mobileStorm first launched a carrier query, or number verification, to verify that all numbers were valid cell phone numbers

Fashion Style MP3 Player Looks Like a Nano Cut in Half

I guess the year wouldn’t be complete without the mention of some cheap iPod knockoff.  But this is more like ripoff and then sliced in half. The 1GB Fashion Style MP3 Player looks like the bottom half of the latest iPod Nano cut in half. The MP3 player comes in pink, green, blue, and silver and retails for $12.99. Other than that maybe save up for the real thing…

Which Happens First? BlackBerry OS Gets Overhauled, Or, iPhone Gets A Keyboard?

I was just having a very interesting conversation with a couple of co-workers…  One is a long-time BlackBerry user.  The other just got a brand new iPhone 3G S for Christmas.  As iPhone 3G S user showed off their new gadget, long time BlackBerry user said, “That iPhone is pretty cool, but, I would never get one because it has no keyboard.”  iPhone user replied, “I really miss they keyboard on my Curve, but, the OS on here allows me to do so much more than I used to be able to do.” This got me to thinking…  RIM has no choice but to overhaul the BlackBerry OS and some point.  Apple could sell keyboardless iPhones forever, but, they undoubtedly would exclude millions of potential customers that will never buy a phone without buttons, so, I think that we eventually will see an iPhone model with a keyboard. The big question for me…  Which one will happen first? Which Happens First? BlackBerry OS Gets Overhauled, Or, iPhone Gets A Keyboard? is a post from: RIMarkable

Theme Review Wednesdays: Circles, SnowTime, Mord

In an attempt to expand the theme developers we feature in this bi-weekly space, I’ve started to search out new ones on my own. This has yielded positive results this week — though we do feature one of our regulars. I’ll continue noting any new themes I cross in my BlackBerry travels, but this works better when crowd sourced. If you are a theme developer looking to have your themes featured, or if you’re just a regular BlackBerry user who has found an excellent theme, email me, jpawlikowski at bbgeeks, and I’ll take a look. Hopefully my efforts mesh well with yours, and we can put together some killer theme features

Xbox Live Games Coming to Windows Mobile

Gaming has been a big part of the success of the iPhone. There is a huge choice of games available, from some of the leading games manufacturers. This popularity of mobile gaming hasn’t been lost on Microsoft, who are in a prime position given their position in the gaming market with the Xbox console. The ideal option would be to combine the two and port Xbox games to the Windows mobile platform, and it seems Microsoft are looking to do just this.

Exchange Server 2010 Simplifies Mailbox Database Design

In a recent post I discussed the various factors that must be considered when planning an Exchange database design . For Exchange Server 2003 and 2007 the layout and naming of databases played an important role in the ease of administration as well as the balancing of database load.  If Help Desk staff randomly chose a database to host a given mailbox it could easily lead to unbalanced servers and result in poor performance of the Exchange back end. Fortunately Exchange Server 2010 makes this a lot simpler thanks to several improvements and new features. Database Performance Improvements An immediate improvement in Exchange 2010 is the database performance, when viewed in the context of disk IOPS (Inputs/Outputs per Second) required to perform certain operations.  Simply put, a given operation in Exchange 2010 (let’s say a user sorting their 10,000 item inbox by name instead of date) generates far less read/write load on the disks that store that mailbox database.
