Kingston Shows Admirable Response to Security Flaws Found in DataTraveler

As hackers continue to develop their insidious tools, committed device manufacturers have to decide how to handle the economic strain their advances induce. Several flaws have recently been discovered in one current and two discontinued models from Kingston. Flaws that could be exploited by a very sophisticated hacker with some sophisticated tools. The DataTraveler BlackBox, DataTraveler Secure and Elite Privacy USB drives are susceptible to the attack.

B.R. Guest Registers LBS Success

Location based mobile ads have proven a force to be reckoned with in the restaurant industry. And as B.R. Guest’s popular chain of restaurants illustrates with its resounding mobile marketing success, the eatery’s location based mobile ads have driven substantial foot traffic to the establishments. According to the restaurant chain, mobile marketing efforts to drive both awareness and foot traffic to its Vento Trattoria and Wildwood Barbeque restaurants reportedly yielded a 5% response rate or better on most days during the campaign’s run. Mobile advisory firm Mella Media worked in conjunction with B.R.

China Encourages Foreign Entrepreneurs & Investors to Establish Businesses in Country’s West Regions

China will make it easier for foreign investors and entrepreneurs to start businesses in the country, especially in its western provinces, the government said in a statement released after the latest State Council meeting on Wednesday. It said China would open a wider range of sectors such IT, software outsourcing to foreign investors and entrepreneurs and would encourage them to establish labor-intensive businesses in the west, the State Council, or cabinet, decided at a routine meeting. The cabinet’s decision will serve as a guideline for local governments to develop specific policies for implementation. China drew $77.9 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first 11 months of 2009, 9.9% less than in the same period of 2008. Inflows, which surged in the years after the country joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, are in the midst of recovering after being hit hard late last year by the global economic slowdown.

O2 UK: blame the iPhone for our network outages

Network issues have plagued carriers all over the world. After AT&T made headlines, the issue is now more or less universal. An FT.com interview now quoted a O2 head as follows: … The head of O2 has apologised to customers who could not make phone calls because the mobile operator’s London network was overwhelmed by bandwidth-hungry smartphones. … O 2 ran into difficulties in the capital during the second half of 2009 as customers with smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone ramped up use of applications that repeatedly pull data off the internet at short intervals. … Even though the iPhone definitely is a bandwidth hog, reports of O2 bandwidth issues were covered by industry journals like Mobile ever since 2008.

Apple Event on Jan 26 says Fox News and Financial Times

2010 will be the first year that Apple doesn’t take part in MacWorld, but that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t have big announcements that need to be made. According to both the Financial Times and Fox News, they’ve been told by a “source inside Apple” that the company will be holding a special event on January 26th that will be focused on the mobility space. What does that mean? The iSlate / iGuide / iPad / Apple Tablet should become a reality. Now, we aren’t ones to spur unnecessary excitement, but lets look at the facts.

Pocket Informant 1.2 for iPhone: Outlook is good for Outlook Sync

Outlook Sync has just come to Pocket Informant on the iPhone. This means that Outlook and PI users can finally bring all of that PIM data together in one seamless wireless sync. I use 2Do for my task management (Patrick uses Things), but if you’ve been waiting for a one-app solution for your calendar and task management needs, then this version of PI is likely for you. It’s still expensive for an iPhone app at $12.99, although I suppose that could be seen as a bargain compared to other task-only iPhone apps (Things and ToDo both cost $9.99). You can check out a few more details on the new update over at Gear Diary

Gyrotate – Line ‘em up, and Take ‘em out for Endless Fun

Wander through the App Store and you’ll find an ever-increasing list of puzzle games, many of which seem eerily familiar. Like a seven-year itch in December, playing the same old games starts to lack a certain spark.  Gyrotate by Goos Trix Ltd . may be one app that will keep your thoughts more on playing the game and less on what you might be missing in the App Store.

Windows Mobile 7 and Custom UI like HTC Sense

windows mobile 7 There was a rumor floating around that custom UI like the one from HTC will not be present in the upcoming WM7. The rumor came from msmobiles.com but was quickly shot down by mobiletechworld.com who found an interesting bit of info from xda-developers. if HomeMachineStatus.WM7Device.Value then IsWindowsMobile7Device = true PredefineItem = 1 HomeItemCollection = HomeManager:GetHomeCollection(1) else IsWindowsMobile7Device = false PredefineItem = 0 HomeItemCollection = HomeManager:GetHomeCollection() end It looks like if the device is WM7 then HTC wants to show a specific UI which may be a completely new HTC UI. What do you guys think will HTC need to cover up the WM7 Home Screen or will Microsoft put out some great new UI to revive the Windows Phone brand.

TiVo set to launch TiVo Premiere DVR?

It’s been quite a while since TiVo has given us a new model of DVR, but a shipping error pretty much confirms that the company is set to launch a new device called TiVo Premiere (alongside the TiVo Premiere XL.) Recent TiVo HD purchaser Patrick McCarron had a TiVo Premiere setup guide included in his order, and he decided to throw the whole thing up on Scribed for our perusal . The main details here are the the S-Video port is out, and there is only space for one multistream CableCARD now, as opposed to the two slots found on the TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD

Review of the Samsung Omnia II

OmniaII Are you a fan of the Samsung Omnia II, are you planning to get one soon then you might want to check out the review by mobilitysite.com . They have done a detailed software and hardware review. Their Verdict : ” The Samsung Omnia II is a strong, light-weight handset with a fabulous AMOLED display that did not deplete battery life as fast as expected and a powerful 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. Applications like Smart Reader, Smart Memo, Swype, and FM Radio work flawlessly and should be included on more smartphones! A few downsides to this device are the apparent lag to load widgets when switching from panel-to-panel, the absence of the ability to list new programs on the Main Menu while in TouchWiz mode, and the inability to switch to landscape mode in most programs. Plus, the abundance of static shortcuts and the lack of live-updating widgets was surprising.

Alien Axis Turns Puzzle Solving on its Head

Take a small, green alien named Otto, the tilt response of the iPhone and an adventure puzzle with 28 levels to navigate and you get Alien Axis in a nutshell. Alien Axis requires players to navigate Otto from start to finish while avoiding certain obstacles and interacting with others. It’s fairly simplistic in design and slightly reminiscent of a ball in box puzzle, but with a bit more pizzazz and depth.

Apple tablet mockup spotted hiding on Clearwire website?

If you were a hardcore skeptic and entertaining serious doubts about the Apple tablet, well, let’s just say Clearwire’s latest home page won’t do you any good. Spotted just behind the Zune HD there, and to the left of a PSP Go, there is an odd looking creature with a shiny touch screen, a dock on the left side and a background and toolbar that looks suspiciously Apple-esque. Unfortunately, it’s also a fake tablet image we’ve seen before that has floated around the internetz. Better luck next time, Clearwire? Thanks, Nicholas! Read

Engadget Disses The BlackBerry On “10 Gadgets That Defined The Decade” List

So, I was just taking a look Engadget’s 10 Gadgets That Defined The Decade and I have simply got to call foul.  In some type of complete travesty of justice, the Palm Treo makes the list, yet, the BlackBerry only gets an honorable mention. I just have four words…  Are you frigging kidding!?! The BlackBerry is the primary reason (horrendous management is a close second) for the demise of the Treo and Palm in general and I dare say that no other gadget, less the cell phone and laptop have had a bigger impact on business this decade than has the BlackBerry

Sprint to get 4G Mobile Hotspot from Sierra Wireless soon

We get the feeling that early 2010 is going to be big for Sprint’s WiMax. We came by one of these training slides for a new 3G/4G mobile hotspot, precisely like the Mi-Fi, for Sprint. Like many of Sprint’s wireless data cards, this one is also going to be made by Sierra Wireless. What we’re hearing is that this new device will be able to support up to five users via Wi-Fi and its range is being increased to 100 feet. In addition to the added range and power, it will also support SD card storage; while that doesn’t sound like a big deal, the data can be shared by every user who is connected to the data card.
