Government Calls On FCC To Keep Closer Eye On The Wireless Industry
Those of us consumed in the world of mobile marketing and its subsequent topics tend to easily forget about the backbone of the mobile industry- the wireless companies themselves. While they exist with a tremendous amount of regulation, the FCC and other government organizations are flooded with consumer complaints and internal inquiries each and every year. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has taken notice of the problem and called on the FCC to not only increase oversight of the entire wireless industry, but to do a better job of enforcing consumer protection rules as well
There are certain events that signal the nearing of a BlackBerry release. One of them is when a device hits eBay, which the BlackBerry Tour 2 (Essex) did this past week. The timeline is a bit strange this time around, though, which is our main topic on the Geekcast this week.
Elvis may be gone, but he certainly isn’t forgotten. On the perennial list of top celebrity earners who just happen to be dead, Elvis Presley remains both a hot brand and lucrative industry – a veritable business of music, merchandise, and memorabilia that continues to drive revenue for the many employed by all things Elvis. It’s no wonder then that Elvis has finally arrived in the world of mobile marketing. To commemorate a series of events honoring the 75th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s birth next month, Elvis Presley Enterprises is preparing to launch a free Elvis Mobile app for Apple’s iPhone and iTouch.
So far, Palm’s Pre has not hit Eastern shores. In fact, it has not hit many shores at all – Pre availability can still be counted on your fingers. Nevertheless, Palm seems to be committed to increase its reach slowly but surely – and the Czech Republic could be the next target. Dow Jones Newswires reports the following: … We’ll certainly include Palm Pre in our product offering but at the moment I can’t tell when exactly,” T-O2 spokesman Martin Zabka told Dow Jones Newswires, adding the Palm Pre’s launch will likely be during next year. … Not much to add here…
Pareto’s law is one of the few “natural laws” which every reader of the Tamoggemon Content network should be familiar with – it says that 80% of every effort is caused by 20% of the beneficients. For example, 80% of the Coke bottles consumed in an OEBB ClubLounge are claimed by yours truly, his wife and a few other frequent travelers (20% of total population – 2) who abuse the system . Onto more serious things: a recent Wall Street Journal report quoted AT&T’s CEO as follows: With about 3% of smart-phone customers driving 40% of data traffic, AT&T is considering incentives to keep those subscribers from hampering the experience for everyone else, he said. “You can rest assured that we’re very sure we can address it in a way that’s consistent with net-neutrality and FCC regulations.” So much for Pareto…
Cloud benefits and risks highlighted in ENISA report
The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has issued one of the most comprehensive reports on the security risks and benefits of cloud computing. The report takes an impartial look at the cloud phenomena, and it starts out with the obvious—that is, cloud computing’s benefits of ease of access, scalability, instant provisioning and monetary savings are undisputable, but the biggest issue holding people back is the security concern. In many cases, the concern over security is one of perception. We tend to think that things are more secure if we can put our hands on it. But the ENISA paper gets into more specific detail about precisely what the top security risks are: Loss of governance

Scaling Up vs Scaling Out Exchange Server 2007 Roles Part 3 – Mailbox Servers
In part 1 of this series I wrote about scaling Transport servers , and in part 2 I wrote about scaling Client Access servers . In this third and final post in the series I will look at scaling of Mailbox servers. Mailbox Servers The role of the Mailbox server for Exchange Server 2007 is to host the mailbox and public folder databases for the organization. In other words this is where all of the email, calendar, and other Exchange data is stored. The Mailbox server accepts direct MAPI connections from Microsoft Outlook clients, but also receives other connections such as Outlook Web Access and ActiveSync via the Client Access server. As the backend of the Exchange system the Mailbox server is usually located on the most powerful hardware and is often configured for high availability . Because of the direct client access to the Mailbox server any performance problem is likely to be noticed immediately by end users, unlike say the Hub Transport server that may deliver mail slowly during periods of poor performance but this may actually go unnoticed by the users. As an organization sends and receives email throughout the day the Mailbox server processes these transactions in its databases. This means that careful attention needs to be paid to the disk performance of the Mailbox server, but attention also needs to be given to the processor and memory.

Video: Twitter on the Nokia N900: via browser versus via app (Mauku)
This video was made a couple of days ago and was initially just to show Mauku running on the N900. It’s a very simple, fast and easy to use twitter application, getting you to your twitter feed and sending out tweets quickly – respond/retweet and check out other people’s posted links. To get Mauku , Go to the App Manager Click Downloads You’ll find Mauku either from “Internet & Networking” category or from “All” Just click “Mauku”, check “I understand and agree” and “continue” (Another great thing about the N900 and Maemo 5 is that it’s so easy to install an application. No deciding whether to install on Memory card, phone or mass memory, or having to accept certificate after certificate…Click install – Done.) Whilst it’s fantastic that the N900 can load up websites like your computer does ( check out N900 with YouTube – just fantastic! ), some sites like twitter.com do need a little work around for mobile and the smaller screen. Mauku is great for getting your tweets out quickly on the go and interacting with your feeds, but it doesn’t offer the same functionality as Nokia’s favourite Twitter app: Gravity

Hey all, This is just a bit of a rant on my part because Nokia seem to be letting the little things slip! It starts when I buy a 6303 for a gift so thought get from the Nokia store so it’s unlocked (cus they are a pain to unlock) and so I can get in black which seem to be scarce in the UK especially because I want to use a o2 SIM in it! (Managed to also use a 10% voucher code and should get another 10% back through Quidco) So I order, and the package arrives a few days later and think to my self…i’ll just check it out and set it up so it’s ready for the person to use… Nokia 6303 Box Label Ok so far so good – Correct phone, UK type and correct colour according to this, lets open it up… Nokia 6303 phone + voucher Ok it is the black one and they have even included a voucher for 10 free Music Tracks, nice … Nokia 6303 Accessories Now here is where things go wrong…Nokia seem to think that in the UK we use 2 round pin plugs (or want us to charge our phones in the bathroom in the shaver socket!) Now I bet you’re wondering why have I wasted your time about a small mistake like this? Well it’s because recently Nokia seem to just keep slipping up, Ben over at The Really Mobile Project spotted that the Nokia online shop sent out very strange e-mails last month after pre-ordering the N900: Link to track package was invalid E-mail to contact Nokia not correct Phone number to call Nokia (for a uk purchase) was: 1-800-***-**** Now I challenge you to be able to call that number and get through to Nokia! General tone of some part of the E-mail sounding unprofessional Maybe these are just a couple of things that have been happening and Nokia thought would go unnoticed…but why does it seem to be happing to us bloggers so much, are Nokia trying to make us loose faith in them?!? Ow yeah and the other reason I thought I’d spread the word is that they were supposed to call me back today with a resolution (hopefully a replacement changer) but never did! If you have had a similar thing happen let me know…just comment below!

Nuance offers Dragon Dictation for iPhone at no charge
Nuance has announced a slick new app for the iPhone called Dragon Dictation that takes the speech recognition tech that works well on the PC and puts in on the iPhone. The result is an application that allows you to dictate your texts or emails rather than typing them out. If the app works with Bluetooth devices or headphones with a mic this may well be the answer to the need for sending texts and emails on the road.

PARIS – Tim Ferris started his talk here in Paris a few minutes ago saying that his original title for his bestselling book was rejected by the publisher. He then decided to use Google to bid for varying book titles and see which one would be more popular -’The Four work week’ came out trumps. Tim says that there are 3 tipping points for attracting mass attention in the media and that you should PPC: Phenomenize, Polarize and ‘Communitize’. Tim opted to pitch his book at people looking to change their lifestyle in non-traditional ways. He also stored media-grabbing stunts (like his experiment to gain 17kg in a short space) for just prior to the book publishing date in order to obtain links to his blog or book site.
