2009 – from a Palm head’s point of view

It’s this part of the year yet again: a stupid, boring New Year’s eve party straight ahead, and loads and loads of thoughts rotting in the brain of yours truly. As usual, this is the time for our “New Year’s eve” post series – what has happened in the industry this year? For the boys in Orange, 2009 wasn’t too bad a year. This was not so much due to their own effort, as rather due to a generally stagnant market.

Top 10 MobileCrunch Posts of 2009

Ever wonder what stories of 2009 the people of the Internet found most interesting? I can’t really help you there, but I can tell you which stories on MobileCrunch got the most pageviews. Now, you might assume that most of our popular stories involved the iPhone, but — well, actually, you’d be right. The iPhone isn’t alone on the list, of course; Android makes a handful of appearances amongst our most popular stories, including one that I never would have seen coming

Leaked: The Motorola Mirage might just be the best Android phone yet

Oh, Android – how good you have been for Motorola. It was only months ago that they were teetering on the edge of obscurity; one 350-person Android task force later , they’ve got the most popular Android handset in the lands and are being name dropped on a nearly daily basis around the rumor mill . A Chinese leakster managed to get his mitts on this (confusingly obscured) shot of an unreleased Motorola handset, and was nice enough to share it with the world. According to the original source, the handset you see up there is called the Motorola Shadow (or “Mirage”, depending on who’s translation you believe.) What the tipster lacks in well-framed pictures, they make up for with knowledge of the specs: coming in at a ridiculously thin 9mm, this baby supposedly packs a monstrous 4.3 inch screen running at a resolution of 850

Tekkeon myPower 1250 iPhone External Battery Case Review

The more you use them, the less you need your laptop – that’s the marketing line for smartphones. As the bellwether smartphone, the iPhone leads the pack in usage and accessories. Third in our series of battery cases for iPhone is the myPower 1250 from Tekkeon . This battery case departs from the others reviewed thus far, not only with an upgrade to the material, but with coverage on the sides and front of the iPhone and a different take on the role of a battery case. Is it better

[ Filed under Geography & Travel or in the Art & Design category ] Auld Lang Syne and good riddance recession of 2009! Making noise and fireworks on New Year’s Eve is believed to have originated in ancient times, when noise and fire were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring good luck. Whether you make a New Year’s resolution or not, be sure to celebrate 2010. Yes, the fireworks can be harmful and dangerous, but they are spectacular without a doubt.

How-To: Work Around Magic Mouse Disconnecting From Bluetooth

Recently, a few users have noticed how Apple’s new multitouch “Magic Mouse” will disconnect at seemingly random times. Although the the mouse will connect just fine upon boot and is usable for a while, it’s been known to become unresponsive and the “Connection Lost” icon will float at the bottom of the screen. Per CNET , some users have claimed that just clicking the mice will get them to connect again while others have mentioned tapping it on the case of their desktop computers was how they get it to connect.

BBGeekcast: December 31, 2009 – Episode 97

It’s the last show of 2009! It was a good year for RIM, as they released a number of high-quality devices — the Curve 8900, the Tour, the Curve 2, the Storm 2, and the Bold 9700. They’ll surely gear up for a similar year in 2010. But we don’t quite talk about that. Instead, it’s all about RIM’s big promise: security

AViiQ’s laptop stand is the most portable ever–and gorgeous too

The AViiQ laptop stand is the most portable I’ve ever seen–and also the most gorgeous. At 12 3/4″ long, unfolded and supporting your laptop, the AViiQ laptop stand is only a little bigger than a sheet of paper. Folded, it’s not much bigger than a No.10 envelope and weighs just 5.5 oz, so it fits easily into your laptop bag or even just a laptop sleeve

Samsung M5650 Lindy Review

The Corby range of handset from Samsung have proven to very popular since their recent release, with the easy to use touchscreen devices catching the eye with their customisable back covers, which Samsung call Fashion Jackets. Undoubtedly the kings of the touchscreen device, in terms of wide popularity across a number of handsets, Samsung are pushing on with further releases under the Corby name, with an ever higher specification. This policy is borne out with the Samsung M5650 Lindy , a compact and lightweight touchscreen handset that packs in a high level feature set whilst retaining a low to medium level market entry price point. The M5650 sports a comfortable QVGA capacitive touchscreen, supporting up to 256,000 colours and measuring 2.8 inches point to point. Additional Reports Bolster Likelihood of Apple January 26th Media Event

A new report published by Fox News has bolstered rumors regarding Apple’s anticipated media event on January 26th at the Yerba Buena center in San Francisco, California. While the original report indicated that Apple had reserved the space to make “a major product announcement,” today’s report indicates that sources have first hand knowledge that the event will be associated with a product in the “mobility space.” For those anticipating the release of a tablet device at the event, Apple has reportedly told some of its iPhone developers to prepare their apps to run on a larger device, which is not a major undertaking given the flexible foundation supporting today’s iPhone apps. Reports that Apple is hosting its own January media event at the Yerba Buena, a location it has historically used for its fall iPod-related music events also help explain why the company announced last year that it would no longer be presenting a keynote or even hold a booth at IDG’s Macworld Expo event. The event date set in late January allows the company more time to plan and prepare for the slate introduction

DisplayLink Wholeheartedly Supports USB 3.0

Besides flash drives , RAID and even movie kiosks , video applications are moving fast to take advantage of ten-fold increase in bandwidth offered by USB 3.0 . The first to jump onto the SuperSpeed USB bandwagon is none other than DisplayLink whose latest DL-195 network video chipset is already struggling with HD output on a heavily congested USB 2.0. If DL-195 is designed to be scalable, then the upgrade might just be as easy as swapping in new USB 3.0 peripheral bridge.

Social Media and Mobile Tech Jobs Show Strongest Growth in 2009

There are 3 phrases that have rarely been spoken in the same sentence recently: Jobs 2009,Social Media and Mobile Technology are the exception. According to a report by Indeed, 7 of the 10 fastest growing opportunities of 2009 were social media or mobile-tech related, with Twitter showing the strongest growth. This isn’t surprising, of course, as growth is relative and where we were before as social media was not nearly the buzzword in 2008 as it was in 2009. The important aspect here is that as 2010 rolls through, we should expect the gains to continue and the relationship between the economy and the social web to stay tied hand-in-hand. Until the “next big thing” comes out to replace sites like Twitter and Facebook as valid business needs, we shouldn’t expect anything to change.
