BrightHand’s mindshare stats – October 2009

As usual (for this time of the month), the folks at BrightHand’s have just released their “mindshare stats” for the last month. These stats are generated by monitoring the usage of the web site – a very valid description goes as follows: … This report is compiled based on the number of views each product page receives, so every time someone clicks on a product they’re giving it a vote in these monthly rankings. This listing doesn’t necessarily indicate which models are the best selling, just which ones Brighthand readers are most interesting in learning more about during the preceding four weeks. … Anyways, onto the list. The position in the bracket indicates last month’s rank: HTC Hero (1) Samsung Moment (new, runs Android) HTC HD2 (new) Nokia N900 (new) LG Versa (returning, dumbphone) HTC Touch Pro 2 (2) RIM BlackBerry Storm 9530 (10) Nokia E63 (6) Nokia E71 and E71x (3) Samsung Solstice (returning, dumbphone) Related posts: BrightHand – mindshare stats for May BrightHand releases mindshare stats for June BrightHand releases mind share stats for August 2009

Sony Ericsson Kurara shows up in new photos, promises HD video capabilities

Remember that Sony Ericsson Kurara which appeared last week in two photos that actually didn’t show much? The handset has now been spotted in new images, and this time we can take a better look at it. As previously reported, the Sony Ericsson Kurara is a smartphone based on Symbian S60 5th Edition and it should be included in SE’s Entertainment Unlimited line-up (like the Satio and Aino ). The features of Sony Ericsson Kurara apparently include a 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen display and an 8.1MP camera (which, judging by the HD seen on the phone’s back, should be able to record video in HD)

Tethering unofficially returns to AT&T iPhones thanks to BlackSn0w

Good news, everyone! As you may have heard by now, the iPhone 3GS and 3G are now fully carrier-unlockable thanks to blacksn0w – but that’s not all! In addition to making your iPhone carriers SIM card slot play friendly with just about any SIM you can cram in there, blacksn0w also undoes some of the locks put in place by Apple/AT&T during the upgrade to 3.1. Namely, it removes the IPCC lock which prevented tethering. I just got my iPhone up and tethering in all of a few minutes – we’ll have a tutorial up in just a bit

Google Analytics now available for mobile apps (Android and iPhone)

Google has recently launched enhanced mobile reporting features for Google Analytics, which allow you to “see how people are using specific parts” of their mobile applications on Android and the iPhone. The data provided by Google Analytics helps app developers find out how users interact with their apps, what features they use more and so on. To learn more about Google Analytics for Android and iPhone mobile apps, you should read the technical documentation and check out the SDK on Google’s website . iPhone 4th-gen “midboard” on sale at Chinese retailer?

The vendor claims they’ll be able to ship the OEM part within 5-12 days, as well as that they have “final pictures” of the iPhone 4th-gen back cover that they’ll be adding to the site soon. As for the midboard itself, it’s said to be 113.5 x 57.3 mm which makes it slightly shorter and slightly narrower than the current iPhone 3GS. Normally we’d be indecently sceptical about any leaked Apple parts – in fact we are now – but as Gizmodo points out, China Ontrade were spot on when it came to the iPhone 3G’s display assembly. They had access to that part a month ahead of Apple’s official launch; that raises the question of when this fourth-gen device might drop, considering a new iPhone handset isn’t expected on the market for another eight months. Keep a lookout for it maybe coming to the market a little sooner.

Bus-shelter made out of a bus

Here’s a sweet bus-shelter made out of a bus — the irony is that the bus that stops here is made out of a bus-shelter. Dumping auto waste or old auto parts is one of the major problems for most nations across the world. Resurrecting old school buses, sculptor and designer Christopher Fennell has devised a bus shelter that not only looks unique but also helps in reducing the huge piles of auto waste. Made of selective parts and pieces from three iconic school buses, from the years ’62, ’72 and ’77, and old city line seats, the yellow bus shelter is a unique way to attract people toward recycling and adopting a green lifestyle

AT&T files suit against Verizon for its latest ad campaign

No doubt most everyone has already seen Verizon’s “There’s a Map for That” ad campaign and had a good chuckle over it, but apparently the big wigs at AT&T are the only ones not laughing and have decided to sue Verizon. The logic behind the move? AT&T feels Verizon is attempting to deliberately mislead the public with its map comparing Verizon’s nationwide 3G coverage to AT&T’s limited 3G coverage.

Microsoft Exchange & the Great Smartphone Boom

The IBM Simon first shown in 1992 was the world’s first smartphone.  It had all the basics like smartphones have today including a calendar, contacts, clock, and notepad and most important to every person on the go, email.  But the smartphone actually didn’t reach large public sales till the 1996 release of the Nokia Communicator line of phones. Seen as a take-with-you-anywhere device within the enterprise segment, this communications tool did not become popular until the larger expansion of Microsoft Exchange and Activesync products. IBM Simon in Charging Station Microsoft Exchange, first released with the Windows 95 operating system was Microsoft’s first module in charge of handling email. This would later become an important tool for companies to manage emails and other collaborative tools within their company network and would grow in popularity as an industry standard overtaking the former industry leader Lotus Notes in 1997 . Microsoft Exchange would later introduce a mobile option called Activesync which was released in 1996.

Sony Reader Cover with Light for the PRS-600 Touch Reader Review

A few weeks ago, I reviewed the new Sony PRS-600 Touch ebook reader.  The reader did not come with the book-style cover that I prefer.  I found the 600 would fit into the Sony lightwedge cover I had been using, but the lightwedge itself didn’t line up properly with the screen on the 600, and it would have covered the touchscreen.  I can’t live without a book light.  Not only do I use it at night, I also use the book light even when I read during the day or in well-lighted rooms.  I find the extra light helps my older eyes read longer without eye strain. … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: eBook Readers and Gear Tagged: Cover , Sony Reader Sony Reader Cover with Light for the PRS-600 Touch Reader Review originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on November 3, 2009 at 4:26 pm.

Newly discovered Safari bug could mean big fees for some iPhone users

Whenever you hear about bugs and exploits being discovered in the iPhone’s browser, Safari, it’s usually the doings of some masterful meddler who devoted hours to unearthing any flaws they could find — not some user casually tapping around the application. Apple’s pretty good at keeping things locked down, and the iPhone’s got enough users that most of the nasty user-facing bugs have been flushed out. Well, except for this new one. It’s not an incredibly common bug, and it doesn’t seem likely that it would hit most users – but for the iPhone users this newly discovered bug does affect, it could mean huge operator fees. The flaw, as discovered by Estonian Apple Site AppleSpot : If the user visits a site which uses Motion-JPEG (most commonly used for security cams and live feeds) in Safari, Safari will continue to gobble up bandwidth even after Safari is closed

Almost Thought For Minute That Verizon Wasn’t Going To Lock The Droid Down

I’ll be the first one to say how much I love Verizon’s network and pretty much recommend it to anyone who travels and / or needs to know that they are going to get a strong signal pretty much everywhere and never drop calls. I will also say that all the crap that Verizon installs on their devices in an effort to control or lock down what said devices can do natively unless, of course, you are willing pay an additional fee, is a horrible way for them to treat their customers and if T-Mobile or AT&T work well enough for you, go with them. Case in point, the Verizon Droid, which happens to be coming out this weekend, can connect to Microsoft Exchange without any help from Verizon, however, because Verizon says that the Droid is “primarily a consumer phone”  they are going to charge you an extra 15 bucks per month to do so even though they aren’t providing you additional service.  To be completely honest Verizon probably spends less money supporting customers who pay the $15 Active Sync charge simply because they don’t have to actively block you from accessing Exchange Servers which the Droid can do out of the Box. If only AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint didn’t suck when it comes to network coverage in comparison to Verizon.
