We know, today is totally Android 2.0′s day to shine , but what would a Friday night be without a little diversity? Windows Mobile 6.5 officially landed on a gaggle of Windows Phones back in early October (a month ago to the day, in fact), but by and large, all of ‘em have seemingly drifted off into some forgotten corner while Motorola’s DROID has taken over the hype. Still, we’ve got a feeling at least a few of you loyalists went out and gave Sir Ballmer a few more of your nickles, and now we’re eager to hear if you’re loving or regretting that choice. Is 6.5 really a worthy update over 6.1?
Vobis Computer Announces the Highscreen Zeus, its Second Android Smartphone
In July we reported on a new player in the Android market called Highscreen. Highscreen is a smartphone brand made by Vobis Computer, and in July released a device called the PP5420 that was virtually a Mobinnova Ice except with Android inside, and was launched in Russia. Now the same company, Vobis Computer, has announced its next attempt at Android called the Highscreen Zeus, which will be launched in Russia at an unknown time for 13,990 rubles ($483 US). Needless to say, the Zeus has a much nicer ring to the name than PP5420 ever did
The daily roundup: here’s what you might’ve missed
Netflix instant streaming demoed on PlayStation 3 We’ve got to admit — the whole thing looks exceptionally sleek, but given the PS3′s multimedia prowess, we didn’t really expect anything less HTC Hero / Eris mega faceoff on video Any way you lean it’s a pretty good handset with some perhaps overly bulky software, a wonderful pricepoint and probably a limited time in the sun with upcoming Android 2.0 devices rolling on in. DROID mania sweeps the nation, so to speak And if riffraff like us can waltz into the store and get them, you should certainly be able to. Good luck being assimilated out there today. Other news of import Poll: Will the DROID have you in its clutches? OpenOfficeMouse isn’t free, isn’t pretty Unused Adamo XPS prototypes reveal touchscreen trackpads, key-less keyboard Microsoft emancipates Digital Cable Tuners with second Media Center update today This half should enable all Windows 7 PCs to work with the CableCard tuners, sans-OEM requirement or inconvenient hacking
4. I Am Rich The defense: When launched, this $999.99 application that throws up a glowing red light and the words “I am rich.” Booyah, bro, let’s go do some shots! The complaint: Apple has a policy against function-less apps, and deemed this one fit that (rather sky-high) bill. Fairness of the judgment: As this app comes as close to literally doing nothing as possible — hey, sort of like absurdly rich people! — it technically falls afoul of Apple’s policy. But then again, it isn’t offensive or harmful, other than the fact that it represents the worst kind of conspicuous consumption. (Did we mention the $999.99 price tag?) The flip side is that while this largely useless but harmless app is denied, legions of obnoxious fart-noise making apps and their ilk continue to flood the App Store.

Found under: LG , Snapdragon , Qualcomm , Android , , LG is apparently working on a new Android phone which will hit Korean market in 2010. The phone is going to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor on board which makes it a lot more interesting than LGs current Android smartphone the GW620 aka Eve. Theres no name for this mystery LG Android phone yet and were expecting it to arrive only at some point in the second quarter of next year
Associated Press and Verve to Support Mobile Apps Developers?
Found under: Associated Press , Verve Wireless , Apps , , Guess who is interested in mobile content Does Associated Press sound plausible to you Well the news agency is apparently going to work together with Verve Wireless in order to offer support to any mobile app developer out there. The two companies are particularly interested in publishers that are going to create apps but dont exactly have the necessary resources to do it. So what does the developer have to pay in order to take advantage of Associated Press and Verve Wireless su Read More Read more in mobile format
LG prepping Snapdragon-powered Android phone for 2010 release
LG has broken new ground with the release of their first Android phone, the GW620 or otherwise known as the LG Eve in the local scene. Unfortunately, compared to some of the newer Android phones such as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and Motorola Droid , its specs are a bit on the underwhelming side. Well, if you’re one of those folks who feel that LG could have done a better job with the Eve, then maybe this latest bit of news will cheer you up. LG is reportedly working on the Eve’s successor and one of its main upgrades will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Yup, you read that right boys and gals
Guitar Hero and Rock Band drums combine for ultimate MIDI kit (video)
We’ve seen our fair share of Guitar Hero / Rock Band drum kit mods , but without exception, this one is our fav. Tipster (and tinkerer) Jordan has taken the time to wire up a Guitar Hero kit and a Rock Band kit in order to create the most bodacious set of MIDI skins this planet has ever seen. Using a combination of Osculator, JunXion Lite and Logic, he was able to rig up the Rock Band pedal to operate as a high-hat pedal, while reprogramming some of the heads to act as cymbals. We’d bother explaining more, but we’ll just point you past the break and advise you to watch (head to 2:20 if you’re short on time!).
1. Baby Shaker The defense: In this stretch of the word “game,” your job is to quiet a crying baby by… (wait for it) shaking it as hard as you can, until it dies. The complaint: We shouldn’t have to spell this one out, but Apple objected to the patently offensive content of the game. Fairness of the judgment: We’re comfortable with backing Apple on this one. While we’re firmly against the idea of censorship and are uncomfortable with Apple deciding what’s in good taste and what isn’t, at the end of the day selling the game would cast Apple as a purveyor of infanticide snuffware
Hacker cracks latest iPhone OS, Apple starts looking for iPhone security manager
The cat-and-mouse game between Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) and would-be iPhone hackers is about to get a little more interesting. Following the recent release of “ blacksn0w ,” an iPhone unlocking tool capable of unlocking new iPhone 3GS’s running the latest iPhone OS, Apple has posted a new job listing for an “iPhone OS Platform Security Manager.” Apple is apparently looking for someone to head the development team tasked with securing iPhone boot-up and operating system installation as well as other aspects of iPhone platform security. We’re not sure if Apple is looking for someone new to fill the position, or if Apple wants to replace the current iPhone OS Platform Security Manager
We had a great contest this year, with tons of awesome projects, and frankly we had a heckuva time picking winners. But the votes are all in now, and with the scores finally tabulated, I am pleased to announced the winners of the Make: Halloween Contest 2009 . The envelope please…. Third runner-up: Everett Bradford’s “Prometheus Device” Everett has won an F1 Evaluation Platform (valued at $39.99), plus a $50 Maker Shed gift certificate. Second runner-up: Eric Kingston’s “Silly String Shooting Pumpkin” Eric has won a PICKIT 3 (valued at $69.99), plus a $50 Maker Shed gift certificate.
With the iPhone application, you can play music wirelessly from iTunes and/or the internet in any room of your house or apartment. The Sonos Zoneplayer S5 costs $399 each and you need one for each room you want to set up. You can grab one for multiple rooms and control them from your iPhone or using the free PC or Mac desktop client. You really need to watch this demo video to understand what this is and how cool it is. The setup is a tad pricy, but if the sound quality is a good as I have heard it is, it would be worth it for sure.
Myka ION brings Hulu, Boxee and other web content to your TV
It’s been almost a full year since we heard a peep from the fine folks at Myka , but it looks like we could be talking about ‘em a lot more often judging by the specs list on its latest contraption. The simply-titled ION is an Atom-based media PC that relies on NVIDIA’s Ion graphics set and a customized interface that brings Hulu , Boxee and pretty much any other web content you can stumble upon to your television. Within, you’ll find a 1.6GHz dual-core Atom 330 CPU, up to 4GB of RAM, ten USB 2.0 ports, VGA / DVI / HDMI outputs, an eSATA connector, Ethernet and plenty of audio outputs. The fanless design ensures that things remain quiet, and for those oozing cash, a Blu-ray drive, HDD and WiFi module can be implanted. It’s up for order right now starting at $379, but you’ll be stuck waiting four to six weeks for delivery
Garmin ecoRoute ESP module gets priced, detailed further
Well, it looks like we won’t have to wait until CES for more details on Garmin’s new ecoRoute ESP module after all, as a listing for the device has now already turned up on GPSCity.com, and the site has even provided us with a few additional, as yet unofficial availability details. Apparently, the cable (which ties directly into your car’s on board diagnostic system) will run $149.99 and might “possibly” be available by the end of the year, but is more likely to roll out sometime in the first quarter of 2010 — and it’ll supposedly only work with nuvi 1xxx series units that have Bluetooth. If that’s not enough for you, the site also has what appears to be the first set of screenshots of the interface, which detail everything from speed and breaking to fuel economy and your carbon footprint. Hit up the link below for the complete rundown. Filed under: GPS Garmin ecoRoute ESP module gets priced, detailed further originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 18:33:00 EST
