The CrunchPad is no more
Anytime over the past year-and-a-half or so, whenever someone asked me what I thought about the CrunchPad , my answer was pretty much always the same: you’ll never get your hands on one. Call me a cynic, but I just found it difficult to believe that Mike Arrington would be able to pull off what no other major consumer electronics manufacturer has been unable to do as of yet. Today, Mike announced that the CrunchPad is dead. No more.

Holiday Gift Guide for the Gamers
“… Or how I blew your college fund on sparkly trinkets.” Thanksgiving is now over, and so the spirit of crass materialism rides in on a chilly breeze. The holidays are almost here, meaning that you’re likely going to need to drop some hard earned ducats on the people who make it a point to hound you year-round. That being said, if you’re not a hopeless misanthrope like myself, you might already be thinking about what to buy for others. Or for yourself.

Nokia N900 – Initial Impression
It’s been a few days (almost a week) spent with the N900, and I have to say it’s been used as a 2nd device predominantly. Mainly due to one issue – at this current time it will not work with a new 3G only 3UK sim card, but apparently there is a firmware update coming which will fix this issue. I think that would be a wise decision 3UK are very much like the N900 – open (well more than their competitors) so it makes sense to make it widely available. Whether using the N900 as my 2nd device has affected my opinion of it so far I have to say is unlikely

Baidu Targets Google with New Search Engine App
Baidu, the Chinese search engine equivalent of Google, is taking aim at their US competitor by directly targeting Google with a new mobile search application that, according to multiple published reports, will begin turning up pre-installed on mobile phones. For now, Baidu will only say that the much-hyped search will start shipping “sometime in 2010.” If you’re wondering which mobile devices will carry the app, your guess is as good as anyone’s. Baidu is still ironing out details with yet-to-be named device manufacturers

Black Friday Sees Mobile Shopping Explosion
Looking at the data of Black Friday purchases over mobile phones, one would wonder if we’re recovering from a deep recession. On Black Friday 2009, mobile online payments through PayPal were up nearly 650 percent year-over-year, according to the eBay-owned payment company, in data reviewed by Dow Jones . The data was compiled from eBay’s PayPal and TheFind.com, a product search engine. Searches from mobile devices increased from about 5,000 on Black Friday 2008 to about 200,000 this year according to product search engine TheFind.com.

Should Porn Be Apple’s Biggest Fear?
The musical Avenue Q might want to update it’s lyrics to “The Mobile Phone is for Porn.” While Apple has avoided allowing a porn store on its iPhone, Google’s Android device won’t judge. Called MiKandi , the world’s first adult-only app store was recently launched for Android devices. In the porn-only store, users can search a range of free and paid applications. Users can post reviews and join discussions. What does adult videos have to do with mobile marketing

T-Mobile Complete: Is A $300 Contract-Free BlackBerry Curve Too Expensive?
I just happened to be in a Wal-Mart the other day, and, as I walked by the cell phone area, casually asked one of the folks working there how the BlackBerry devices were doing. The young lady told me that they were flying off the shelves, especially the new T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve (8520). I asked if they offered the pre-paid ( T-Mobile Complete ) version as well and she said yes, but, that she couldn’t remember selling any as most people thought that $300 was way too expensive. I know that this conversation is completely subjective and based just the thoughts and opinion of one Wal-Mart associate, so, I pose the question to you… Is the T-Mobile Complete BlackBerry Curve 8520 too expensive? T-Mobile Complete: Is A $300 Contract-Free BlackBerry Curve Too Expensive? is a post from: RIMarkable

What’s the difference between mobile marketing and mobile advertising?
This does not have to be a long post, I just wanted to set the record straight once and for all. There is a difference between “Mobile Marketing” and “Mobile Advertising”. A lot of times you will read an article about a successful mobile marketing campaign and it has to do with mobile advertising, I suggest you try and set the author straight. Its important we are all talking the same language.

Performing Outlook Migrations
For many corporate employees the Christmas season can be both a time of stress and joy as the push to complete projects on time goes into overdrive and employees look forward to year end Christmas bonuses. Likewise, the year end for many corporate computer users can be a source of both stress and cheer as end users learn about plans to upgrade their computers and laptops. An upgrade can be as simple as adding more memory or as ambitious as replacing slower and less efficient computers. Or sometimes the upgrade is software

25 Million Chinese Phones Will “Die” Tomorrow
India will effectively “kill” some twenty-five million Chinese cell phones beginning tomorrow, December 1st. India’s Department of Telecommunications has given the order to operators to “block cellphones” without a valid IMEI number. The move leaves millions of Chinese using mobile phones without IMEI number with only two options: buy a new phone with a valid IMEI number or get the number implanted in your current phone using available software through the Cellular Operators Association of India. India’s Ministry of Communications remains concerned that, if not handled appropriately and swiftly, these anonymous phones could fall into the hands of unsavory characters and potentially be used for terrorism

Sim Cards for travelling abroad
In the run up to the coming festivities, amongst the planning of which family member to invite, which one not, who to buy for and what to get them, there is a core of people whose mind is occupied with nothing else but getting away from it all. For some, this will involve going on a retreat, to deepen their understanding of the true meaning of Christmas, but for many it means planning a winter break holiday, going somewhere for Christmas and New Year, to rest and relax, and enjoy the holiday. Amongst all that planning, one thing that can often be overlooked is the cost involved in using your mobile phone abroad .

Applying Email Strategies To Mobile Marketing
Email marketing has been a useful tool for a long time, and even though mobile is a new-age channel for marketing, the same strategies and optimization used for email campaigns can – and should – be implemented in mobile campaigns as well. There was an interesting article on Marketing Vox recently that talked about SMB’s increased interest in email marketing, citing several surveys showing that nearly three-fourths of all SMBs plan to implement email marketing due to its high ROI. A recent report from the DMA states the average ROI for email campaigns is $43.62 for every dollar spent, and that it remains a top marketing medium for it’s low cost and high ROI. The article also listed several tips for email marketers, including priorities such as targeting and relevance, which seem to mirror the tips and strategies necessary for successful mobile marketing as well. Advertising to email and mobile devices is very similar in nature, especially if you’re comparing email and SMS marketing

Google Wanted AdMob’s iPhone User-Data
There’s been a lot of speculation as to what plans Google has for AdMob, and why it spent such a large chunk of change to acquire it . While it’s obviously interested in it’s broad mobile reach in terms of advertising, Google likely had its eye on something else only AdMob has- all that iPhone user-data. With the onslaught of smartphones in recent years, the complexity has increased dramatically and so has the advertising targeted to them. AdMob spearheaded the movement to focus on creating unique ways to market to smartphone users, and particularly iPhone users – one of the most advanced and widely-used smartphones around.

Review: AddOnIs v1.3.0 By Twinkler Software, LLC.
There’s a few apps out there that seem to compliment the BlackBerry OS, as though they are the missing piece of the puzzle, the “mini Me” that complete the OS making it as close to perfect as it can be. This is one of those apps. With The Mobile Heist today, I thought this would be a great time to review AddOnIs by Twinkler Software and let you know what I think of it. This app is really interesting. It normally sells for $9.95 in the BlackBerry Sync Store, but for one day only you can grab it for $4.97.

Editorial: What About Us?
I’ve got a question. How many of you have had the opportunity to try out the new BlackBerry Bold 9700, regardless of the carrier? Pretty cool device, don’t you think? I mean with WiFi, HSPA, new optical trackpad, even the battery life has improved quite a bit. So all in all, seems like the perfect BlackBerry, right? Well, not exactly. While I do feel that the Bold is probably one of the best BlackBerry devices ever due to all that’s mentioned above, it is my opinion (and I’m sure I’m not alone) that the Bold, along with other newer devices, is way too small. It seems to me that RIM isn’t considering the fact that not everyone has tiny hands. I’ve got pretty large hands, and have a hard time using it. That’s why I haven’t purchased one, and will not. I have service with Telus here in Canada, and now that we have the new HSPA network, it seems to me that my only viable option is to get a Bold 9000 and unlock it if I want the HSPA speeds on my BlackBerry. Smartphones are small to begin with, and this doesn’t help. I find it very hard to type on and make frequent spelling mistakes when I tried writing a long message on it. If RIM would have made it just a bit bigger, then I think it would be perfect. Now this is not to say there shouldn’t be smaller form factor BlackBerrys, because I know a lot of people who find some other ones too big and don’t want a Pearl due to the SureType keyboard. So that’s all fine. Then there are those who want the smallest phones possible, so the SureType works for that crowd. So what about us? I think RIM should come up with 3 major lines of device… SureType style – Keep the Pearl line the way it is so those who want a small device with BlackBerry features can have the best of both worlds. Curve/Tour/Javelin/Bold 9700 style – Those who want the full QWERTY keyboard without the bulky device Bold 9000 style – Make some bigger phones with a bigger keyboard so I don’t feel like Shaq trying to use an iPod Nano.

Foreign Vendors Benefit from Chinese Goverment Outsourcing Initiatives
China’s importance as an outsourcing location is rising fast, but a fragmented local vendor landscape and a domestic market dominated by Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprise customers means that it will be the major Western and Indian outsourcing vendors that will reap the rewards, according to a new report from analyst and consulting firm Ovum. The Chinese government is anticipating the need to migrate its economy from manufacturing to a services base in the long term, and has put in place a strategy to ensure that China will eventually rise to challenge India in the outsourcing sector. The Chinese government has designated 20 cities for outsourcing business and the investment in infrastructure, education, training and tax incentives at these locations is extremely impressive. Software parks are being built rapidly and on a large scale with transportation links to match and the university education system has ballooned to create 6.1 million graduates this year. It is clear that the Chinese government is intent on providing first-class infrastructure in which IT services and BPO vendors can flourish
