Kwikset finally adds remote locking functionality to door locks
Kwikset’s SmartKey has been lacking in intelligence for quite awhile, but at long last, the outfit has finally added a pivotal feature here at CEDIA: true remote locking and unlocking. The new remote access control solution is being dubbed SmartCode with Home Connect — an unnecessarily lengthy way of explaining how the company’s keyless locks can now communicate wirelessly with other devices. Users can also check-in on door lock status when they aren’t automatically arming / disarming, and you can initiate customized scenes upon entrance and exit in order to more accurately pretend that you’re Prince. There’s no mention of pricing, but given that you’ll need to hit up a Control4 retailer to get your hands on this puissant technology, we’d recommend bringing the bank.

LG GD900 Crystal
With the LG GD900 Crystal, seeing is believing. The GD900 features a slide out fully transparent touchpad. Not just amazing to look at, the Crystal touchpad is touch sensitive supporting handwriting recognition and gesture control which lets you access applications by simply sweeping your finger across the keypad (i.e. draw an ‘M’ to open the music player). The LG GD900 also has a 3.0 inch touchscreen sporting the S-Class UI for fast and fluid navigation, an 8.0 Megapixel camera, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity and a music and video player supporting DivX.

The N900 hasn’t even be released yet, but we already have a demo of what will no doubt be one of the most requested apps for the device, and is usually for any platform – a remote control! Irreco will take advantage of the N900′s IR (infra-red) to allow the user to control their home devices using their N900 handset. Not only that, but with the ability to customise functions and themes, it looks like a pretty slick app! Just check out the video demo below: via [ maemotalk ]

Android misses handset growth target for Spain
BARCELONA Since the launch of Android devices in Spain in April this year and up until last week, only a very limited range of handsets from Taiwanese manufacturer HTC have been available on the market. An article in today’s Expansión reveals that this is set to change, with Samsung launching its Galaxy model on Monday and Motorola looking to launch its Dext model in November. However, all of this is unlikely to alter the fact that Android’s target for an installed base of 6m units in Spain by the end of 2009 will not be met. Current estimates show that Android devices represent only 2% of the handset market share in Spain

Lights, Camera, Action And The Nokia N900
I was lucky enough to awake and find a very interesting tweet on Twitter which was asking for those in London interested in attending a video shoot for the Nokia (rover) N900. If you didn’t see that tweet then you obviously were not following @WeAreMaemo . As it happened I replied and got myself confirmed to attend the shoot as it was a first come first serve basis. In a West London studio somewhere I turned up to find myself watching a few people going through their scenes whilst the producer and I had a chat about what was going on, my role and waiting for Philip Hickey from Nokia Marketing to turn up

m-commerce : taking asia by storm
Following on from last night’s very well-attended m-commerce event at Mobile Monday Sydney, here’s a l ink to a Terrapin event website for m-commerce Asia 2010 : … the key stats from this event flyer are worth extracting : “In Asia, mobile commerce transactions are expected to reach almost $500 million, according to Gartner research. Gartner also forecasts 2.4 billion transactions will take place in Asia, more than anywhere else in the world.” This of course in stark contrast to the low-key predictions of our speakers Harold (m-Hits), Chris (Pay by Snap) and Tasha (PayPal) about the glacially slow progress of m-commerce in Australia where ‘there’s just no compelling need for anyone – especially banks – to change the status quo’. Comments on that anyone ? Photos! Above: the erudite Gia Villondo in full swing : Above: our panellists Chris, Tasha and Harald tackling questions around a nascent m-commerce industry in Australia See you next month on the 5th of October for our l ive client-agency pitch event !

linux users "formating MMC" this might be your way out
linux users, I thought might contribute a possible non windows solution (if windows crashes whilst formating this might be your way out!). This will reformat your card hence lose everything on it! If you use a linux live cd (ie whole os booting from cd) you can pop in the cd, boot, re-partition, format and hopefully that should make it work again without changing anything from your window setup. The best linux cd I can think of for this purpose would be the gentoo linux minimal install live cd as it has a feature called devfs which will should make your cardreader work straight away. Also if you unplug any unwanted usb drives (ie usb hard disk, pen drive etc) that way your cardreader should be the first usb drive and given sda as its label (my guide works around that) http://gentoo.blueyonder.co.uk/releases/x86/2004.3/livecd/install-x86-minimal-2004.3.iso (50.5 meg) Burn the above file to cd, then place in drive (or just not take it out) then restart your computer and select cd boot (this maybe automatic) Make sure you have your cardreader installed before booting your computer.

HOWTO: Repair a Corrupted Mobile Memory Card
HOWTO: Repair a Corrupted Mobile Memory Card Correct Treatment of your Mobile Memory Card: Physically, memory cards are quite fragile pieces of high technology, susceptible to damage from various silly things like excessive heat, condensation, strong magnetic fields, physical damage from rough handling and/or bending! (similar to most electronic devices then..) Given the natue of mobile memory card products, they are constantly being taken in and out of some form of interface with a mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, or desktop PC, or a separate memory card reader. The number of different devices they have to be able to interact with is in the thousands. It is not too surprisingly, then that sometimes the state of the file system on the memory card can get damaged. This may happen for a number of different reasons, including: removing the card from a device whilst an application is trying to read/write to it.

The OI’s Founder Comments on Outsourcing Transformations
Today, outsourcing is a widely used practice for organizations striving to improve their productivity and reduce costs. Having left doubts “if we should do it at all?” in the past, now they have to choose from a wide range of outsourcing destinations that exist and keep appearing on the global market to understand where their outsourcing best match is located. Frank Casale, CEO and chairman of the Outsourcing Institute, gave an interview where he commented on how outsourcing has changed since its early days, and the factors that should be considered when outsourcing offshore . In the early 90s most of the outsourcing was big deals with big companies that were in big trouble. And it was mostly U.S.
